Palm FM Radio Recycling Competition

Last week Rydon school were entered into a competition on Palm FM Radio to make Christmas decorations using recycled materials. Listeners had to vote for their favourite designs and Rydon Primary had the most votes and won! The prize was for the children to visit the radio station and record our own Christmas message which is to be broadcast all over the Christmas period on Palm Radio beginning this Thursday. On Monday, 16 children were taken to Palm Radio in the morning and had a great time recording the message. The school also won some paper making kits.

This week has been Environment Week at Chudleigh CE Community Primary School. The formal curriculum was suspended as all the classes undertook a wide range of activities to develop their understanding of international, local and school based environmental issues. All the children went out into the local environment during the week including trips to Dartmoor, local woods, quarries and meadows. The Year 2 children visited Paignton Zoo to look at the environmental issues in rainforest regions. The Y1 children visited Embercombe to spend a day looking at how their food can be produced in a more sustainable way in the local environment. As part of this day they collected all they needed to make their own launch.

The children also looked at how we can 'reduce, reuse and recycle' more at home and school and the older children went on to investigage the impact of our lifestyles on people in other parts of the world. It is planned that the week will end with a fundraising day for Devon Wildlife Trust and Water Aid as well as an assembly when each class to share some of the things they have done. There will also be an exhibition of work in the school after half-term.

David Barnett, Headteacher said "This week is a fantastic opportunity for the children to develop work started last term towards our Eco Friendly School Award . Our aim is to increase awareness of environmental issues around the world and those closer to home. By the end of the week we hope to have started to improve our school's environment and environmental practices, to have a clear picture of what we can do to make the community a better place to be in as well as some practical ideas about what we can do to help the planet."
