Headteacher, Mr V Game, reflects on the School's successes and the students' achievements.

A Happy New Year to you all!

It is hard to imagine a more disruptive start to the New Year with all of the problems caused by snow and ice.  The conditions of the first day of snow made it very difficult for staff to get into school, particularly as about half of them live on the Exeter side of Haldon Hill!  On the Thursday the problem was the icy conditions across the county and on our school site.  The County Council decided to suspend all school transport.  About 35% of the students travel on school buses so this has a large impact.  On the Friday, however, I judged that the conditions had improved sufficiently for staff to get into school and so we re-opened.  In the event, nearly all staff were in and although bus children were absent, it was a productive day.

On Tuesday 12 January we were supposed to have our Year 9 Options Evening, but snow was forecast over higher ground.  Although it was only raining in Kingsteignton, we began to get reports of the snow settling on higher ground so I decided to postpone the parents’ evening and close school 20 minutes early.  It is worth noting the difference a bit of height makes.  On that evening there was a thick blizzard at the top of Telegraph Hill, but at the bottom it was raining and there was no snow on the ground!  Hopefully now we are back to the status quo.

Our new build is progressing rapidly and classrooms should be ready for use very shortly.  Outside landscaping, tarmacing and coverings will take a little longer, but we should be back to normal after half-term.  I must say that everyone has coped really well with the disruption and inconvenience, but it will be great to be back to normal.
