Healthy Eating Policy

Aim

To ensure the availability of healthy food choices from the Catering Service at Teign School at an affordable price. This will be achieved by supporting 'the Health of the Nation' White paper with emphasis on the production of healthier food and assisting in the education of consumers so that they are more able to make healthier choices.

 

The School's aims are to promote the:

  • increase in dietary fibre, fruit and vegetables
  • decrease in the intake of fats, especially saturated fats
  • decrease in intake of sugar
  • decrease in the intake of salt and salty foods
  • adequate intake of proteins, minerals and vitamins

 

10 Point Code To Promote Healthy Eating

 

  • 1. To make all those involved in serving and supervising meals aware of the benefits of Healthy Eating.

 

  • 2. To provide a range of meals which meet the nutritional guidelines and which take account of health, religion and ethnic preferences.

 

  • 3. To give suitable attention to the marketing and presentation of food to make the healthy options attractive to pupils and to ensure that they are prominently displayed.

 

  • 4. To adopt different methods of indicating healthy options.

 

  • 5. To ensure that lunchtime eating areas will be comfortable and attractive to pupils and well supervised.

 

  • 6. To ensure that the healthy main meal choices are available throughout the meal serving time.

 

  • 7. To ensure that a healthy choice of 'snack items' is always available.

 

  • 8. To promote a pricing policy that encourages the take-up of healthier options.

 

  • 9. To promote a closer liaison between those involved in classroom education and those providing meals to ensure that food provision in the school is consistent with and reinforces classroom messages about healthy eating.

 

  • 10. To provide regular monitoring of meal provision to ensure that specified standards are provided.
